Delhi / Kasmir Trip Travelogue…

16th May – Flight to Delhi from Mumbai…

We reached Delhi at 9am. The hotel had sent a driver to pick us up at a rate of Rs.450/- [Regular rate – Airport to Karolbagh -300/350Rs.].It was an Indica, which he had to park in a parking lot that was at a 10 minute distance from Airport exit terminal.

We reached Hotel Paras International, Karolbagh in about 30 min drive. The hotel was booked at Rs.1200/-, because of reference of a relative. But frankly it was worth about 800-1000 bucks range..and 1200 was supposed to be a 50% discount. But the good part – Karolbagh is an interesting area, lot of wholesale markets there and eateries too. Bought a memory pro-duo for my cybershot there…

I had fixed up a package with a guy called Tony for sightseeing purpose in Delhi. First day was supposed to be Akshardham only, which was not necessary as we had reached Delhi quite early. Anyway the bugger ditched us, saying that we were supposed to start the sightseeing from 17th and also suggested that we would be better off we took a taxi as it would be cheaper.

So I asked the hotel guy who said he can give us an Indica at 900 bucks for the whole day for local sightseeing..which we took up but he gave us a smart alec of a driver who was not only reckless in driving but also did not know the roads well!!!

But I had decided – no more losing of temper in this picnic…even if it meant I had to give in to cheats and beggars…wanted wifey and kiddo to enjoy…
So we started our trip with my cybershot…First we went to BIRLA MANDIR..As expected it was very nicely maintained and very clean. It proves one thing, if management of monuments, tourist attractions are handed over to private institutions or the corporate world, they would do a better job of managing than the government.

After Birla Mandir, we went to Qutub Minar. The ticket counter is a place of chaos, the toilets if they can be called that are stinking. This is supposed to be Delhi’s number one sightseeing place for tourist!!

Intricate Carvings, names of modern day laila majnu’s, sick graffiti, small children relieving in open spaces etc…nice place…
Always imagined Qutub Minar to be taller than it actually is…not much impressed….infact not at all…come on, now people reading this blog can thrash me for not being patriotic…or worse for being communal – detesting the monument because of its mughal lineage…You may be wondering why I write the above…but I do have received in the past some mails or comments from such jokers..By the way, Mughal food is good…

Now MR RAMLAL, the driver said we need to "make a entry" after visiting Qutub Minar. I was wondering what purpose does it serve…but than he took us to a handicraft showroom…and I just couldnt keep myself in control anymore….lost it…and gave it to him in real DELHI/HARYANVI language…
His expression was hilarious – he was just zapped, wondering how this mumbaiya gujju was speaking in such lingo…He was ok later the whole day except for entertaining me with his sob stories of garibi, bacche and mahengayi…in between visiting monuments…

Well we reached NEHRU MUSUEM / Planetarium. My son, who nowadays is into astronomy, expressed desire for the planetarium show. So off we went for that…[But will continue tomorrow..]
